Characterization of Domains Admitting Strategy-Proof and Non-Dictatorial Social Choice Functions with Infinite Sets of Alternatives

چکیده
We show, with an example, that the theorem on the characterization of the domains admitting strategy-proof and non-dictatorial social choice functions by Kalai and Muller (1977) does not hold when the set of alternatives is infinite. We consider two ways of overcoming this problem. The first identifies a set of domains admitting strategy-proof and non-dictatorial social choice functions when the set of alternatives is infinite. The second defines a class of social choice functions for which the theorem is true with both finite and infinite sets of alternatives. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Number: D71.

Collective Choice Rules on Convex Restricted Domains
We study sets of preferences that are convex with respect to the betweeness relation induced by the Kemeny distance for preferences. It appears that these sets consist of all preferences containing a certain partial ordering and the other way around all preferences containing a given partial ordering form a convex set. Next we consider restricted domains where each agent has a convex set of pre...
متن کاملThe Structure of Strategy-Proof Social Choice Part II: Non-Dictatorship, Anonymity and Neutrality*
Domains of generalized single-peaked preferences are classified in terms of the extent to which they enable well-behaved strategy-proof social choice. Generalizing the Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem, we characterize the domains that admit non-dictatorial strategy-proof social choice functions. We also provide characterizations of the domains that enable locally non-dictatorial, anonymous, and ne...
متن کاملMaximal Domains for Strategy-proof or Maskin monotonic Choice Rules
Domains of individual preferences for which the well-known impossibility Theorems of Gibbard-Satterthwaite and Muller-Satterthwaite do not hold are studied. First, we introduce necessary and sufficient conditions for a domain to admit non-dictatorial, Pareto efficient and either strategy-proof or Maskin monotonic social choice rules. Next, to comprehend the limitations the two Theorems imply fo...
متن کاملSocial Choice with Non Quasi-linear Utilities
Without monetary payments, the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem proves that under mild requirements all truthful social choice mechanisms must be dictatorships. When payments are allowed, the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism implements the value-maximizing choice, and has many other good properties: it is strategy-proof, onto, deterministic, individually rational, and does not make positive t...
متن کاملOn the manipulability of the fuzzy social choice functions
In the social decision making context, a manipulator attempts to change the social choice in his favor by misrepresenting his preferences. Gibbard and Satterthwaite [7,10] established independently that a strategic manipulation can be observed when using any non-dictatorial voting choice procedure. In this paper, we are interested in the manipulation of the social choice when individuals reveal...
